Negative Self Talk

I've become acutely aware recently of the vocabulary I use on the reg. Hey now, I don't mean ugly words and swears…I'm a lady, damnit!  What I'm referring to is the language I use when speaking to myself. About myself. In my mind.

• I really shouldn't eat that.

• I feel fat

• I AM fat

• Eating this will MAKE me fat

• I've been so GOOD

• I've been so BAD

• I should be doing something productive right now instead of zoning out on this Bon Appetit filled with recipes I'll never attempt.

• I should work out more.

• I should call my mom.

You get the picture? I imagine it mirrors a tiny corner of your own mind. So this is normal, yes? But healthy? I say no.

It may be "new agey", but self talk is a very important factor of both self efficacy and happiness. Using positive talk in our minds is even linked to positive results with regards to goal attainment.

So what can we do? How about rephrasing... It may take time and practice like all good things, but it's worth it.  I am worth it.  You are worth it.

Let's practice!

• I WILL eat well today

• I WILL listen to my body

• I AM awesome

• I am in charge of my body and my choices

• I make choices that support my needs

• I WILL call my mom

See that wasn't so hard!  Our minds are so powerful that we can change the world around us with our thoughts, with the nature of our emotions. This is scientifically proven whether you choose to believe it or not.

So what could it hurt to try a little positivity?  Try a little love.

XOXO, Jenn
